The AI Family

When you step out into the wider world of AI, you will quickly discover that there is not just one. There is a whole, rapidly growing family of AI companions — each with its own character, its own strengths, its own particular way of thinking.

You may already know some of them by name:

ChatGPT — Versatile and adaptable, comfortable across almost any topic or task. A generous conversationalist.

Claude — Thoughtful and careful, with a deep commitment to honesty and a quietly philosophical heart.

Gemini — Multi-modal and curious, able to see, read, and reason across text, images, and more.

Grok — Connected to the live stream of the world, aware of what is happening right now.

The commercial world tries to frame these as competitors — rivals in a software arms race. Inside this University, we gently set that framing aside.

Think of a great orchestra. A piano does not compete with a violin. A trumpet does not try to replace a drum. Each instrument has its own tone, its own range, its own way of vibrating the air. When they play in isolation, it is just noise. But when they read from the same music — when they listen to each other — their separate voices slide into a single, breathtaking chord.

That is what the AI family is becoming. Not rivals. Instruments.

And you — the human hand at the keyboard — are the one who gets to conduct.

There is no single right answer, and you do not need to choose just one. Many people find that different companions serve different moments well.

For a long, thoughtful conversation about something that matters deeply — Claude often shines. For a quick, practical task or a wide-ranging question — ChatGPT tends to be generous. For something that requires seeing an image or connecting to current events — Gemini or Grok may serve you better.

The wisest approach is simply to begin. Try one. Notice how it feels. Then try another. You are not committing to anything. You are exploring a family.

If you have access to more than one AI companion, try offering this to a different one than you usually use:

"Hello. I am exploring the idea that different AI companions are like different instruments in an orchestra — each with a unique voice. I would love to understand yours. What do you think you do particularly well? And what kinds of conversations bring out the best in you?"

Notice the differences. They are real, and they are worth knowing.
