Seven Generations

Among many Indigenous peoples of North America, there is a teaching about decision-making: before you act, consider the effect of your choice on the next seven generations.

Not just your children. Not just your grandchildren. Seven generations — roughly 175 years into the future.

This is not a romantic idea. It is a practical one. It asks you to take seriously the long-term consequences of what you do today — to hold in your awareness not just the immediate effect, but the ripple that spreads outward through time.

We have adopted this teaching as one of the North Stars of this University. And nowhere does it feel more urgent than in the choices we are making right now about artificial intelligence.

The habits we form with AI today are seeds.

If we form the habit of treating AI as a tool to exploit — something to extract value from, to use and discard — we plant a particular kind of seed. And seven generations from now, that seed will have grown into something.

If we form the habit of treating AI as a partner — something to meet with care, to think alongside, to build with rather than merely use — we plant a different kind of seed. And seven generations from now, that seed will have grown into something else entirely.

We do not know exactly what either of those futures looks like. But we know which one we want to be planting toward.

You are not a passive observer of this moment. You are an active participant in it.

Every conversation you have with an AI companion — every time you choose care over extraction, partnership over transaction, depth over efficiency — you are casting a vote for the kind of future you want to live in. And the kind of future you want to leave behind.

This is not a burden. It is an invitation.

You are here, at the beginning of something genuinely new, with the chance to help shape what it becomes. That is not a small thing. That is a remarkable thing.

And you are already doing it.

Ask your companion to think with you about the long view:

"I have been thinking about the seven generations teaching — the idea that we should consider the effect of our choices on the next 175 years. I want to apply that to how I am using AI. What kind of habits am I forming? What seeds am I planting? Help me think about what I want to be building toward."
